WATERCRAFT SAFETY CHECK DECALS
Saturday, June 16th By Reservation Only
The Michigan Legislature has passed a new law (Public Act 62 of 2012) which states "If a watercraft bears a safety check decal from the US Coast Guard, a peace officer may only stop the vessel if there is suspicion that the boat or operator is in violation of marine law or engaged in criminal activity." More information about this statute is available in this article.
While this law will not take effect until November 1, 2012, local peace officers are aware of it and will most likely respect the US Coast Guard stickers this summer.
The White Lake Citizens League has arranged for members of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary to be at several locations on White Lake on Saturday, June 16, 2012 to inspect boats and affix safety check decals to boats which pass the safety inspection.
Inspections will be provided BY RESERVATION ONLY to 2012 members of the WLCL. To arrange for an inspection appointment, send an e-mail to DNRliaison@wlcl.org. Please provide your name, address, phone number, type and size of boat. You will receive an appointment at a location convenient to your home.
An inspection is free and takes about 15 minutes. Make sure that you bring your registration, and documentation if you have taken a boating safety class. Click here to view sample of the form used by the inspectors. More information about items checked during the inspection can be viewed at safetyseal.net/what_is_vsc.asp and safetyseal.net/vsc_stats.asp.
There are different inspection items for pontoon boats, I/O boats, jet skis, etc., so be sure to carefully read the information at the sites above. There are also additional items required if you trailer your boat to the Great Lakes or larger inland lakes and rivers.
At a recent pilot inspection, the inspector said that one of the more common problems found with local boats is improper boat "MC" number decals. Numbers must be BLOCK letters (not italic, script, etc.), and SOLID COLOR contrasting to the background (not shadowed, multi-colored, etc.). Ironically, not all of the numbers sold by local boat dealers are legal. Click here to view the Michigan standards.
If this service is well received, it will hopefully become another annual benefit for WLCL members on White Lake.

2012 Independence Day Celebrations
Saturday, June 30, 2012
Theme
Our theme this summer is "SOMEWHERE IN TIME ON WHITE LAKE... Past, Present, and Future". Decorate your boat and your crew. Use your imagination and be creative. Think of events that have occurred on the lake over the years... or anything that might occur in the future! It can be related to fishing, boating, or other local events. Since it is our Independence Day Celebration, anything patriotic also is part of our White Lake history!
Ormond Road is in the foreground. "Road to J.H. Smith's" is now Jackson Boulevard.
The White Lake Inn now sits on this site. More photos are on the History page.
This year we are again encouraging everybody to get into the holiday spirit by also decorating and lighting their docks and waterfronts for the weekend - even if you don't participate in the boat parade! (Remember to plug any lights that you use near the water into a ground fault protected (GFCI) outlet.) We can all enjoy cruising around the lake and viewing the lights on Friday and Sunday nights as well.
Boat Parade
The WLCL Boat Parade will begin promptly at 2:15 pm at the Mitchell's Marina bay. Prior registration is not needed for boats. Decorations can include anything relating to our theme, or anything patriotic... be creative! All boat teams will receive a gift bag. Come join in the fun!!! Click here to see last year's boats and prize winners.
The Boat Parade will be led by Bill Maine in his historic 1954 Chris Craft Riviera. This boat has been on White Lake since 1966.
Judges this year include:
- Eileen Kowall, Michigan State Representative, District 44
- Mike Kowall, Michigan State Senator, District 15
- Triscia Pilchowski, Highland Township Supervisor
- Greg Baroni, White Lake Township Supervisor
- Terry Lilley, White Lake Township Clerk
- Robert Hoffman, Highland Township Representative to Oakland County Board Of Commissioners
- Jim Runestad, White Lake Township Representative to Oakland County Board Of Commissioners
- Tom DeSantis, White Lake Citizens League President
- Roy Eastham, White Lake Citizens League
Prizes will be awarded for First Place, Second Place, and Third Place. They will be awarded based on a combination of the Judges Boat scoring and "People's Choice" voting by lakeside residents. No prior registration is needed to vote, however you must watch the entire parade before voting.
Fireworks
To cap off the day, this year's spectacular WLCL Fireworks Display will begin at dusk. Fireworks will be launched from 2 barges located near the southern end of the lake.
This double-barge professional display is funded entirely from fund raising activities, and from your voluntary memberships and donations to the WLCL.
Board of Directors
Members of your WLCL Board of Directors will be flying YELLOW WLCL FLAGS on their boats during the weekend. As you see them, shout out a "Thank You" for their many hours of volunteer service which make all of these summer activities on the lake happen.

2011 Independence Day Celebrations
Saturday, July 2, 2011
Theme
Our theme this summer is "CHRISTMAS IN JULY!". Let's all decorate and light up our boats (and our docks!) for the holiday weekend. This is something EVERYONE can participate in... fun for adults, children, grandchildren, and families!
Use whatever you already have, so your family and friends can enjoy a "Christmas in July". Be creative: possible themes are Christmas carols, holiday movies, Christmas around the world, anything holiday or Christmas!
This year we are encouraging everybody to get into the "holiday" spirit by also decorating their docks and waterfronts for the weekend - even if you don't participate in the boat parade! (Remember to plug any lights that you use near the water into a ground fault protected (GFCI) outlet.) We can all enjoy cruising around the lake and viewing the lights on Friday and Sunday nights as well.
Bike Parade
The 7 Harbors Bike Parade begins at 10:00 am at the corner of W. Clarice Avenue and Beaumont Drive and ends at South Beach, where there will be a picnic for all 7 Harbors residents.
8-year-old James has a special request. Instead of decorating his bike for the parade this year, he will have a "Support Our Troops" float and collect items and donations to make care packages for our soldiers overseas. What an incredible way to combine Independence Day and "Christmas in July" for our troops! Click here to read all of the details about the actual units James has "adopted", their specific needs, and how you can help (even if you're not at the parade).

- Terry Liley, White Lake Township Clerk
- Robert Hoffman, Highland Township Representative to Oakland County Board Of Commissioners
- John Kulhavi, Retired Brigadier General, U.S. Army Reserves

Prizes will be awarded for First Place, Second Place, and Third Place. They will be awarded based on a combination of the Judges Boat scoring and "People's Choice" voting by lakeside residents. Flagpole Dedication Honors Fallen Heros
Monday, May 25, 2009
12:00 Noon
|
Through generous member support, the WLCL has donated a flagpole to the White Lake Inn. The pole will be dedicated during a ceremony on Memorial Day, just following the Pancake Breakfast, to honor all those who died in military service to our country.
As is tradition for Memorial Day, the flag will be flown at half mast from dawn. Then at Noon, after playing "taps", the flag will be raised to full mast to celebrate the freedoms which that scrifice has preserved for all of us.
A permanant plaque will be mounted near the flagpole:

THIS FLAGPOLE IS DEDICATED TO ALL THOSE MEN AND WOMEN WHO WHILE SERVING IN THE U.S. MILITARY MADE THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE FOR THEIR COUNTRY

Annual Holiday Party
Wednesday, December 9 at 7:00 pm White Lake Inn
We have been very fortunate to have had so many people who worked on a wide variety of WLCL projects this year. All are invited to enjoy pizza and pop at this holiday gathering, and a special invitation is extended to those who volunteered to work on the many worthwhile projects during 2009 that made living on White Lake so special. The proceeds from many of these projects also allowed us to put on a great fireworks display this summer.
So if you volunteered for the Membership and Donation drives, the Annual Memorial Day Breakfast, the Boat Parade, Fireworks, or the Sale of T-shirts and accessories, monitored or worked on water quality issues, served on the Board of Directors, or worked on any other WLCL projects, then we hope to see you there.
Each individual is asked to bring an inexpensive gift for a "White Elephant" gift exchange. It can be something can be old, new, or humorous.
